Lately I have been looking into the connections between various theories of personality and various theories of how the brain works to try and come up with a new over-simplified way of understanding the connection. One potentially useful binary is the connection between local and global processing in the brain.

For example, if you squint just right you see that men tend to have more local processing power and woman have more global connectivity in their brains. If you squint even harder you might find that autism kind of looks like an over-emphasis on local processing and schizophrenia almost looks like too much global connectivity.

But this is all about the connectome...would your characterize the transcriptome as relating more to local or global computing?

Yeah, your descriptions re: different types of processing track.

Somewhere in the video – don't have the time stamp at the moment – Joscha explains how the nervous system is a 'best effort computer' because it overlays a bunch of probabilities on incoming information fronts to make them 'deterministic enough' to respond to. The 'optimizations in computing' come from increasing the efficiency of pathways, but this structural optimization gets mistaken for the learning itself; which actually comes from elsewhere, e.g., RNA.

Obviously, I'm not a deep scholar on most of this stuff, but I given all I've written about here, I would say that because the transcriptome has such large effect on neuron organization and morphology, it has a lot of power to encourage the development of either more locally-flavored processing (distinct neighborhoods) or more globally-favored processing (convergence to unified response everywhere).

Interestingly, neither Joscha nor Michael in the video talk about precisely how exogenously-introduced RNA itself trains these new behaviors (what the mechanism is or how to model it), but I'm just assuming it makes certain proteins which then have an effect on the size/scope/binding of neuronal neighborhoods.

I think the wildest thing to find out of all of this is how little of an effect, for better or worse, the **genome** has on the development and functioning or an organism compared to the transcriptome, and to a lesser degree connectome.

This completely throws out most of the knowledge that I learning growing up, which decisively stated that genome quality was of **utmost importance**, and everything else flows from that. Turns out the genome is rather comparatively inert, which is why it can become so corrupt, and it does not seem to matter.

Not to get too metaphysical here, but this seems to track strongly with the Buddhist view of 'self' that is much less dependent on the 'hard material substrate' and much more dependent on the 'interpretive virtualization layer' that runs on top, where most of the adjustment and response happens.

Reminds me of the stories about personality shifts post organ transplantation. A cursory look at some papers and it doesnt look like the research is robust yet, but perhaps personality is conserved and transferred as a result of transcriptome memory. Even beyond that I know there are ongoing efforts by some researchers to bridge GRN research with psychotherapeutic modalities. Thanks for the article.

Yes, it would be interesting to see more research and modeling on how memory is transferred via organ transplant. Thanks for reading!

I I found an article where liberals claim luxury beliefs don't exist yeah they do because so many of liberal beliefs our beliefs that white Africans can have that don't affect them personally like take Mass migration it hurts white working glass people and even black people to a certain extent because it leads to lower wages and leads to higher housing prices but white elites like liberals don't have to deal with it because they live in gated communities I will never have to face the consequences of their actions but take New York soon as they're affected by the very things they advocate they turn into a bleed 180 their anti-immigration now in New York because it's costing them so much money to take care of these immigrants housing them as soon as they're affected by the very consequences they advocated for they want out of it or the hypocrisy about Twitter yeah it's a private company they can ban soon as they're bought liar right when you're into problem we need government for Texas to protect freedom of speech

Well, I'm not sure how your comment is relevant to this particular article, but I am well aware of the concept of luxury beliefs.
